Established in 774, the temple was renovated by a priest called Myoe [1173-1232] after receiving backing from an ex-emperor, including an imperial villa, now the Sekisui'in. Myoe was a proponent of using art for worship, e.g. Myoe resting on a tree is the subject of one painting. One of the most renowned pieces of Japanese art is owned by Kozan-ji, the scroll (Choju Giga) with priests and men depicted as various animals. Note that it is in Tokyo National Museum. Purported to be among the oldest in Japan, some of Myoe's tea plantings are in the temple precincts.
