Established in 774, the temple was renovated by a priest called Myoe [1173-1232] after receiving backing from an ex-emperor, including an imperial villa, now the Sekisui'in. Myoe was a proponent of using art for worship, e.g. Myoe resting on a tree is the subject of one painting.
