Tenryuji Temple - details

Here is a temple whose roots date to the flourishing days when the area had about 52 hatagoya catering to the needs of Naito Shinjuku. It was closed by the Edo government in 1718 and opened again by Okitsugu Tanuma in 1772, supposedly because it was deemed lucrative for Edo's tax coffers. Tenryuji is known because its bell still extant was rung a half hour before the gates were shut.
