Experience of a lifetime - worth every penny
Experiencing the Japanese Ryokan is a MUST Not just a place for shuteye, but a whole evening of extravagance. In Kyoto, staying at the Hiiragiya should be considered as important an experience as seeing the temples and historic districts. The rooms are beautifully decorated with antiques, screens and scrolls. More impressive yet is the attention to every detail lavished on you by the staff. They slip into your room while you are soaking in the bath and lay out the futon. They are more than willing to help you decide a course of action for sightseeing, and to help you understand details about the food, the bath and customs relating to your stay. It's a wonderful immersion into Japanese culture. Finally, the kaiseki meal is exquisite - beautiful, delicious and fascinating - utilizing the freshest seasonal, local ingredients. Lastly some info about the pricing: the above quoted prices are per person. We stayed in the LEAST expensive room and payed $500, or $250 per person. It is worth every penny, and I especially urge someone who has never treated themselves to such an experience in extravagance to bite the bullet (or wallet) and do so!
